I'm not sure if this will help, but here goes: I'm currently running
Mac OS 10.3.7 (Panther) on a G3 iBook. The 'Shorten for Macintosh' I use is version 1.1a4. Check http://www.softsound.com/Shorten.html for info. I know others have had SHN, and FLAC , issues with mac. What has worked very well for me is downloading individual songs rather than zip files. You can download up to eight songs at a time, as one finishes click on another. It's not as time consuming as it sounds with an average eight minute song taking about 10 minutes to download (the eight songs at a time download at the same speed as one song). It might even be faster this way rather than downloading zip files which download at the speed of the entire file.I'm sure there are others on this site that are far more technical and will offer better advice, but this method has worked with excellent and consistent results for me for a year now. Go Internet Music Archive! Thanks to all for the great music and oppurtunity for discovery!

Hm. These two tools do completely different things...xACT is for converting SHNs to wav/aiff for burning to CD (and a whole lot more stuff). MacAmp Lite is for playing SHNs as audio from your hard drive without expanding them. Which are you trying to do?

I'm very familiar with both applications - when you say xACT bombed, what exactly happened? I've helped beta-test it from early on, and I'm happy to help you figure out how to use it if you give me a little more info. :)

i always use Xact, hope you can get it to work, did you try repairing permissions? That usually works for a variety of other things.

I use something simply called Shorten or Carbon Shorten that works great in Mac OS X, but should also work in OS 9. You might be able to download it here:

Heck, it says I can add files, so here it is. Hope this works...
